[Mar. 19th, 2006|04:41 pm] |
I had a double St Paddy's Day celebration on Friday where I went out at 3pm and got a bit pished, came home, went back out to the Shed and got a bit more pished. It was the best night out for a while, I've been having Shed withdrawals as it's been about 3 weeks since we've been out in the southside after the Buffalo Joe's adventure last week. Also discovered that from now on the Shed will be open til 3am on Fridays and Saturdays! Kewl. So it was a cracking St Patrick's day all round (aside from getting a severe slabbering on from an entirely unwanted source *shudder*).
After all those shenanigans I had a quiet Saturday night and decided to rent me some DVDs and have a big ole veg out.
Seriously - NEVER rent 'Red Eye'. It totally sucks balls like you wouldn't believe. If you're going to cast someone as pretty as Cillian Murphy to play a badass assassin dude, at least try to make him even slightly menacing - not have him completely get his ass kicked by Rachel McAdams with hardly a wimper straight from the get go! Are you an assassin or a pussy? I'm sorry, I couldn't tell the difference. Thankfully Mean Creek (I typed that TWICE as 'Man Creek' lol) was heaps better. I also got The Constant Gardener which I'll be watching today. |

| | Rufus Wainwright - Poses | ] | Oh. My. God. I've been waiting for snow for ages and it hasn't came, then last night...boy when it snows it really SNOWS!
Unfortunately I was stuck in Glasgow City Centre because of it!
First time we'd gone out dancing in town for ages as well. About midnight the DJ anounced it was snowing outside and everyone cheered woo hoo then I immediately forgot all about it. Anyway we all decide to head home about 2.45am but when we step out the place is totally covered in a thick layer of snow (and this is in town as well - where it usually gets as far as being a disgusting brown sludge. This was proper fluffy white). The taxi queue stretched to about infinity so when someone announced a 66 bus was heading our way, me and my pal T had to run in the snow (thank god I wore my boots, tho she was wearing wee skimpy sandals) then walk it to mine in what was practically a blizzard on the other end to get her warmed up and try to phone a taxi.
It was totally mental and so not fun (ok, well maybe a little fun). South side for me next week. |

Aw man. Sweet.
ITV3 have been showing seasons 1 and 2 of due South recently - the ones with RayV - which is great and all, but I'm really a RayK girl. Anyway, I'd been worried that they wouldn't show these episodes when they rolled around and would make the season 2 finale their last dS episode.
Well I'm pleased to announce that the first RayK episode, Burnin' Down The House, is on next Friday. Yeehaw! It's really wierd, but even though I have the Kowalski eps on tape and have had them for years - I'm really looking forward to watching it! |

I have Marc Maron back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't properly describe how happy I am to hear his voice again, I have SERIOUSLY missed this dude like you wouldn't believe. I have to podcast his show as he's now broadcasting in LA from 10pm-midnight, which means in Scotland time he's on from 6am-8am which is just impossible for me to listen to in real time. But I am now able to save his shows and listen to them in work at my leisure. Plus I no longer have to sit through adverts for American products I have no access to - there's only so many ads for Geico and The 'Orkin' Man a girl can listen to and stay sane.
YEAH BABY! It's a good day :¬) |

Went to see Final Destination 3 tonight, kind of hesitantly because the second one sucked SO much ass, but it was actually very good. Not up to the standard of the first, but oh so much better than the sequel so on the whole I'm happy.
Bought Rufus Wainwright's double album 'Want' the other day and I love it. He's got one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard in a male artist, it just draws you in - plus he's humina too :¬) It's all good baby! Got it on Play for only £7.99 so it was a total bargain too. Now I'm just waiting on my order from Amazon.com. I ordered a DVD from the US called 'Left Of The Dial', which is a documentary charting the rise, fall and rise again of Air America Radio in the States. I'm very much looking forward to watching it and can't wait for it to get here. And in other news on that subject - The Marc Maron Show's Air America Website launches tomorrow! WOO HOO! I've missed that dude so much and am slabbering to have him back.
Went on Expedia to look up holidays today and for some reason I was really feeling Hawaii. Only slight problem is that a fortnight with flights and hotel comes to TWO GRAND! As much as I wanna hit Honolulu, I'm not so keen on burning my money to get there. It costs roughly the same to travel to Sydney and I'd rather so there so if it's going to cost two grand either way I might as well just go the whole hog and go to Oz (the country, not the prison!). |

Although I have to admit to being a little relieved, we want him nice and injury-free for all that Torchwood and Doctor Who filming he's doing in the very near future :¬) |

| More Brokeback Mountain stuff |
[Jan. 15th, 2006|08:18 pm] |
This weekend has seriously flown in. Seriously. Why do the fates mock me like this? Surely a 4/3 working week/weekend split would make more sense. I know I said I was done with the Shed for a while...but I kinda ended up back there again on Saturday! Totally by accident mind you :¬) And it was actually a really good night! There was no shite and no stressful happenings - just an easy, happy and above all FUN night. T'was hella good.
I'm seriously thinking about enrolling in a drama course. I've been considering it off and on for years now and now I really think I'm going to go ahead and do it. If not the RSAMD then The Ramshorn again (and actually audition this time), to give me more experience before auditioning for the RSAMD maybe in a year. I think a BA in Acting would be what I'd aim for. It's 3 years full time, 6 years part time - how this would affect my job I don't know yet. But let's face it, audio typing and being Bitch and General Dogsbody in an office isn't what I was looking for in fulfilling my life's ambitions. I have the qualifications to get straight into the RSAMD, but it includes an involved auditioning process that maybe a year at the Ramshorn would better equip me to handle.
I read me the original Brokeback Mountain short story by Annie Proulx. Holy fuck that's an amazing read! The film captured the tone PERFECTLY and OMG the choices made by the actors and film-makers becomes extremely clear. I do have some questions though, which I know I'll never have the answers to other than 'creative choices':
- I understand why they chose not to present the narrative in flashback style like in the story, but I would have liked the film to have ended on the same tone - making reference to the dreams Ennis starts having about Jack after his death, and also giving us a reminder again of the young Jack we knew at the beginning. Not too happy about the last scene we have of Jack being him getting his face smashed in with a tyre iron (whether this is what really happened to him or not - and I choose to believe it wasn't).
- The motel scene was absolutely cut to pieces in the film and most of its dialogue sprinkled throughout other scenes, I think that was a mistake as the scene as written gives an extremely strong insight into Ennis that we get nowhere else. Sure they maybe can't include everything verbatim, but they should have included the line of dialogue about how he looks at random people on the street and wonders if this happens to them, and also how he likes doing it with women but "...Jesus H, ain't nothin like this. I never had no thought a doin it with another guy except I sure wrang it out a hunderd times thinkin about you." That's an amazingly powerful piece of dialogue and it should Should SHOULD have been included in the film. They also should have included the bit where Ennis tells Jack about how after they went off in opposite directions he got gut cramps so bad he tried to puke, and how he figured out it was because he shouldn't have let Jack out of his sights.
Mmmm...savour the yummy characterisation.
I can't complain much because the film could have been a total unmitigated disaster. Thankfully it was damn near flawless. |

| | Green Day | ] | Nothing interesting to say except that I'm bored, oh so very bored.
I really want to see Brokeback Mountain again to pick up on all the stuff I missed first time round. I usually do that if it's a film I really loved, because you can be so engrossed in the surface story that you miss the little nuances thrown in that can only be picked up on a second viewing. Plus Ang Lee is the director, so there's definitely more going on than meets the eye at first glance.
Feel kind of out of it tonight, dunno why. Think I'm hitting the midweek slump.
And with that I'm done... |

| | but relieved | ] | I really really don't want to go back to work on Wednesday, I'm enjoying my yummy holidays too much. I've been pigging out big style and loving every minute of it. I've also been able to indulge in two of my less appealing personality traits.
Parte the first:
If I have nothing to do that day and nothing to get up for, then I won't get up. Conversely I will also stay awake until unseemly hours of the morning. I went to sleep at 8am today. I'd went to bed about 6 but couldn't sleep right away, then I took it into my head to write out a comprehensive list of Alexander the Great's friends, enemies, lovers and minor aquaintances from before and throughout his Persian and Indian campaign. I did this because I suddenly couldn't remember the name of the friend he'd speared to death in a fit of rage just before his marriage to Roxane (FYI it was Cleitus). I knew it would come to me and it did, but I just knew in my sleep-deprived brain that I couldn't run the risk of forgetting something so blatently obvious again and had to make a list (complete with footnotes) Right. That. Instant. I really do scare myself sometimes.
Parte the second:
Knowing that my gym is shut for the new year means I will gorge myself stupid on chocolates and crisps with nary a moments hesitation. My lack of self control in this matter astounds me.
Anyway, I'm not bothering because whether I like it or not it's back to normal the day after tomorrow (or really tomorrow given that it's 3am on Tuesday morning). It'll be nice seeing everyone again - it's the actual 'work' part of my day I'm not big with the woohoo about.
I'll also need to put in for holiday time pretty much as soon as I get back. My very good pal caffre is coming to visit again on the 14th of January for a few days so it's all very exciting! If her visit is anything like the last one we're going to have an absolute blast :¬) |

What are your 5 favorite holiday/winter episodes or movies?
1. due South: Good For The Soul Although it might be a bit hokey and sentimental, it works and I adore it for its feelgood factor. Fraser and his big block of wood and his sword from Thatcher, the whole team (read: Ray) being there for him when it counted, the Xmas cheer at the end. Good times.
2. Scrooged 'A Christmas Carol' has been told and retold a hundred times, but there's just something about this particular telling that gets me where I live. Although it might simply be because Bill Murray is just so darned adorable in it - and yay, it's on tomorrow.
3. Oz: Out o' Time This is by far my favourite on the list. It's the season 3 finale and when I finally got to see it it felt like the second coming or something! And of course it has a very strong Christmassy vibe. I had literally waited a year to see this, due to the extreme lag between showing the episodes in the US and when Channel 4 showed them over here. It's just the perfect episode for me - it encompasses Christmas, New Year and Beecher and Keller's first kiss when they're both finally being 100% honest with each other. What's not to love?
4. South Park: Merry Christmas Charlie Manson You've got to hand it to writers who can get you into the festive spirit using a piece of crap and a convicted murderer!
5. Father Ted: A Christmassy Ted In which Ted's quick thinking whilst lost in a department store's lingerie department earns him the coveted Golden Cleric award. I think Father Ted is one of that rare species of TV show that simply doesn't have one bad episode, so of course the Christmas special would be no different. Love it. |

Oh. My. God.
I have no words for how much I LOVED this, it was fantastic! Plus I'm in love with the new Doctor :¬) He's hella hot and I think I'm going to prefer him to Eccleston.
Also really enjoyed the numerous references to Torchwood, it's great to see the writers pimping their new spinoff with the ever so sexy Captain Jack (wow, who would've thunk it that Doctor Who would have so many hot men in one programme?), and the little snippets of the series to come at the end made me wish it was spring 2006 already.
Welcome back Doctor, we've missed ya babe! |
